Notes

> The idea for The Karaoke Theatre Company goes back to at least 2005 when Alan Ayckbourn intended to write a piece called The Karaoke Play for the summer season at the Stephen Joseph Theatre; this never came to fruition.
> The play is the first Ayckbourn play to be part structured and part improvised. Certain elements of the script are set, whilst during other parts, the company are free to improvise around the script.
> It is the first Ayckbourn play to have audience interaction to the extent that the play is shaped by the audience’s responses and their interaction with the company (up to and including acting within the piece).
> Although occasionally mislabelled as Alan Ayckbourn’s 80th play, it is not his 80th play. The playwright regards it as a ‘live entertainment’ and does not consider it his 80th play due to the fact that much of the script is not set.
> For the first time, Alan Ayckbourn invited the public to attend his rehearsals (primarily through the
Premiere Patrons scheme) in order to have a live audience for the actors to interact with.
> The role of Edie (which can be performed by either a male - named Eddie - or female) is intended to be taken by a stage manager and is non-speaking.
